Privacy Policy

Account & profile information. When you sign up, we collect your email address, password, and username. Your profile can also include your name, display name, professional role and intent, a short bio, an avatar photo, your skills, experience level, availability, and links to your website, IMDb page, or Instagram — all of which you choose to provide.

Verification information. If you request professional verification, we collect the information you submit for review (such as professional links) and record the outcome, the date it was requested, and the date it was decided.

Content you create. This includes film projects and their details (synopsis, genre, format, production stage), screenplay and script versions, moodboard images, pitch deck content, project files you upload, characters, references, project updates and discussion posts, feed posts and comments, direct messages, endorsements you give or receive, and any reports you file about other content or users.

Relationship & activity information. We keep records of actions you take that make the network function: who you follow, which projects you save, the project memberships and roles you hold or grant, collaboration and script-access requests you send or receive, likes, notifications, and any users you block.

Technical information. Our infrastructure and hosting providers automatically process standard technical information needed to operate the Service securely — such as IP address, device and browser type, and request timestamps — as part of authentication, security, and reliability.

Local device storage. We use your browser’s local storage for essential purposes only: keeping you signed in and remembering your light/dark theme preference. We do not use third-party advertising or analytics cookies.

We do not collect payment or financial information — WrittenBy does not currently process payments — and we do not request government-issued identity documents.

We use the information above to:

• Provide the Service — create and display your profile, host your projects and scripts, and power discovery, collaboration, and messaging;
• Review and process professional verification requests;
• Operate safety features, including content reports, blocks, and enforcement of our Terms;
• Send you notifications about activity relevant to your account (for example, a collaboration request or a verification decision);
• Maintain, secure, and improve the Service; and
• Comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.

With other users, based on your settings. Your profile is visible according to your settings. Each project has its own visibility, and each script has its own visibility and access controls, separate from the project — so a project can be discoverable while its script content stays restricted to people you’ve explicitly granted access to. Collaborators you add to a project can see the project information relevant to their role. Direct messages are visible only to the people in that conversation.

Public by design. Your avatar photo and any image you set as a project’s cover are intended for public display and are reachable via a direct link, consistent with their purpose of appearing on your profile or project page.

With WrittenBy administrators. Platform administrators can access information as needed to review verification requests and content reports, and to enforce our Terms.

With service providers. We use third-party infrastructure and hosting providers to store data and run the Service (for example, our database, authentication, and file-storage systems). These providers process information on our behalf and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes.

For legal reasons. We may disclose information if required by law, or if we believe in good faith it’s necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of WrittenBy, our users, or others.

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

Your information is stored on third-party cloud infrastructure that provides database, authentication, and file-storage services on our behalf. We use access-control rules designed so that only you, the collaborators you choose, and WrittenBy administrators (where necessary) can reach information that isn’t otherwise public.

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, but no method of storage or transmission is completely secure, and we can’t guarantee absolute security.

We retain your information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Service.

When you delete your account, your profile is deactivated and removed from other users’ view. Some information may be retained for a limited period afterward — for example, where needed for security, dispute resolution, or to comply with legal obligations — before being permanently removed. Content you’ve shared with collaborators or that appears in others’ records (such as a comment on someone else’s project, or a message in a shared conversation) may continue to exist as part of that other record after your account is deleted.

You can review and update most of your profile information directly in your account settings, control the visibility of your projects and scripts, and block or report other users. You can also delete your account at any time.

Depending on the law that applies to you, you may have additional rights over your personal information — such as requesting a copy of it, asking us to correct it, or asking us to delete it. You can reach out using the contact details below and we’ll respond as required by applicable law.

WrittenBy is not directed at, and is not intended for use by, anyone under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we’ll take appropriate action.

WrittenBy serves the global film and cinema community, with a strong focus on Indian cinema. If you use the Service from outside the country where our infrastructure providers operate, your information may be stored and processed in a different country than the one you live in.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we’ll update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
